First brewed in 2008, Vale Ale simultaneously represents a historical snapshot in the Australian craft beer journey, and holds its own in a modern marketplace crowded with competitors. From a 2021 perspective, this feels like a classic Australian take on a pale that has returned to West coast roots.

The palate is undeniably hop forward, bitterness low to moderate, and fruit characteristics pronounced, the body golden and clear, medium weighted, and finishing impeccably clean. Hop characters include zesty aromas of lemon verbena and fresh cut grass, and the palate is saturated with fresh lemon, grapefruit and some subtle resin. Notably absent is the Galaxy-driven passionfruit and papaya that has come to basically define the Australian pale, but as it turns out, the conception of this beer predates the commercial release of Galaxy by a year.

Vale Ale comes to us from a time when tastes were defined by what was happening in America, as Australian beer was still finding its feet as it emerged from the shadow of macro lager. The execution, however, is years ahead of its time, and as tastes begin to inevitably circle back, it proves itself to be worth revisiting time and again.
