ON TAP is our series dedicated to showcasing a growing list of fantastic craft beer venues across South Australia. Got a suggestion for us? Let us know – hello@graild.com.au

Graild has been keen to explore the Yorke Peninsula for some time and Bond Store in Wallaroo was a perfect way to spend our Saturday, after a blustery wind quite literally blew us in! Under two hours drive from the Adelaide CBD, it really is not that hard to even make a day trip!

The history teacher in me was marvelling over the building and renovation alone. The Bonded Store was originally built in 1865 and stored spirits, tobacco and barrels of wine that were unloaded from the docks along with other goods. Now, the multi level building is a stand out on the busy main street. Derek and Nicole Matthewman have spent a great deal of time and effort transforming the 150 year old building into a microbrewery, distillery and restaurant with accommodation, breathing fresh life into the small town of around 4000.

We suggest giving yourself plenty of time at Bond Store, to taste all of their gins and beers! This is a particularly popular place with tourists and locals so we recommend booking, especially heading into summer. The service at Bond Store was fantastic and had a real familial feel to it. We started our adventure on the ground floor with a must have espresso martini made with their house coffee liqueur, beer tastings and delicious truffle fries. Derek explained to us that with the beers he wanted an element of craft, but also needed to keep the familiar beer taste that country town locals and summer time visitors would not feel affronted by. Think delicious crafted takes on your traditional styles (lager, session) plus a range of more craft focused styles to satisfy even the most credited beer aficionado.

The gins were all lined up in rainbow colours and as our friends children were provided with matching pencils and colouring books, we settled in. Huge fans of drinking gin neat, we loved how Nicole has used Australian herbs and botanicals sourcing local produce and what they can from their own garden. My favourite was the pink gin, a touch sweet with striking raspberry notes and the quandong blood orange. We were really excited about this venue, as there is something for everyone.

We were moved downstairs amongst the copper distilling equipment for our dinner and allowed Derek to choose what to bring us, this is a fantastic way to try new and locally inspired dishes. We had the most mouth watering scotch fillet to share, crab balls, octopus, stuffed olives that were fried and falafel (not all together, but rather over the evening as share plates). I really enjoyed not knowing what was coming next and it was great to eat from local producers, growers and from the sea! The bar team were excellent- some of the best martinis I have ever had!

Bond Store Wallaroo is a real shining light for the town. A venue which could sit comfortably amongst some of the flashiest bars in Adelaide and Melbourne. Grab a beer paddle or a gin flight, some truffle fries and settle on in for the afternoon, or hey…maybe just stay all night.

We’ll be releasing a ‘Day Trip’ article soon which highlights how best to experience the Yorke Peninsula on the drinks front. Follow our social media pages to stay up to date.
