How we review

In the interests of transparency we thought it would be important to publish exactly how we rate the drinks we are reviewing. Below you will find the criteria we use, while each has been based on traditional scoring techniques we have added our own touch.

We aim to have as many as possible in our team review each drink. The scores for each criteria are submitted out of 5 and then placed into a spreadsheet which weights them correctly and gives us our percentage shown in the review. We also aim to rate beers against their peers in each style rather than comparing say a sessionable Pale Ale vs a Pastry Stout.

We completely understand that our reviews are subjective and the scores will in no way dictate whether you personally will or won’t enjoy the products we feature. At this point in time, nobody on our team are professional critics. We all have different touch points with the hospitality industry in SA and a love for local producers.

Regarding the scores themselves; this isn’t a James Halliday style “everything below 90 is rubbish” type arrangement.

50-59 | Look elsewhere (Better options exist)
60-69 | Average (Some will love, others won’t)
70-79 | Enjoyable
80-84 | Delicious
85-89 | Highly recommended
90-94 | Exceptional
95+ | As good as it gets

To keep things as approachable as possible we keep the individual criteria scores to ourselves but we’d be happy to show anyone that was interested.
