Sporting an upgraded bottle on last seasons release, the 2018 GSM had lofty shoes to fill. Cooper Burns, based in the Barossa impressed us with a couple of beers earlier in the year, both of which we rated highly. We thought it was about time we took at look at one of their wines. The Cooper Burns labels are not ones that automatically scream at you from the bottle shop shelf. A stock block colour with their serif font logo splashed in front. Some might say dull, others may say distinctive. Especially with other winemakers heading down the loud and ‘in your face’ design philosophy.

Blossoming cherry notes on the nose backed wonderfully well by a light spice, coming across like a light application of ground pepper. On the palate, under-ripe plum, light red fruits and a certain earthiness sit on top of a medium body which feels perfectly balanced. Unlike some GSM’s we’ve experienced lately this stays well away from the sweet lolly vibes and produces a soft wonderfully textured savoury feel. The tannin is light and well integrated.

You can over-think it if you want, but this is just one of those reds which feels immediately drinkable. Enough to keep you on your toes and the interest factor high but if you just want to crack this on a cold winters night in your pyjamas and tuck in, you’ll feel right at home.
